I began my career in photography towards the end of 1997, throwing myself in at the deep end as an in-house assistant at a large studio complex in North London. Although the work was quite full-on it was a great place to see the workings of photo shoots and to learn about lighting and other equiptment first hand. It was also a great place to meet photographers, some of whom I ended up working with after my time at the studio. These included Tom Sheehan, Hamish Brown, Mitch Ikeda, Ross Halfin and Scarlet Page.
While assisting during the day I would be shooting gigs at night, blagging my way into venues around London, always trying to gain access to the most exciting bands. I started to develop some good techniques and soon found my own style. My first commision was shooting the then unknown Travis for a student magazine and shortly after leaving my studio day job I got taken on at Kerrang! magazine and enjoyed many years as one of their freelancers.
Over the years I have been involved in many other Music projects, particular highlights being photographing soundtrack recording sessions at Abbey Road studios for Disney Pixar, and photographing established and up and coming artists for Oxfam and their Oxjam events and their dumping campaign. Another was also to have my work used for the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine featuring Eddie Veder of Pearl Jam.
Last year saw a new direction for my work when I was asked by world renowned vet Bruce Fogle to document a week in the life of his veterinary clinic. It was very challenging and often emotive work and produced some amazing images. Shortly after I was commisioned by Dick White Referrals in Cambridgeshire to photograph staff and animal patients at their surgical center. This involved me donning scrubs and shooting surgical procedures and operations as well as the surgeons and medical staff.
I am also a father of two crazy kiddies and have enjoyed photographing them and their pals as they have grown up. This has lead to commissions from parenting magazines and kids clothing companies.
I am also a Thames Mudlark in my spare time and have had lots of my photographs used in publications and the media. I also appear on the show Mud Men on the History channel which is currently into it's third series.
I will be adding new photos all the time, so please keep coming back. I hope you enjoy my site! Nick
